What Fonts Should be Used in an Architecture Portfolio?

Your architecture portfolio is an important step toward launching a successful architectural career. Choosing the right fonts to showcase your work will make your portfolio look cohesive and polished.

It’s important that you select fonts that are high-quality and professional. Professional doesn’t have to mean boring. Rather, you want text that complements the visual style of your architectural designs without pulling focus away from your showcased pieces.

To Serif or Not to Serif?

The two main types of fonts are serif and sans serif. A serif font has “feet” or added extensions in each of its letterforms. Popular serif fonts include Times New Roman and Garamond. A font without these feet is called sans serif. Helvetica is a classic example of a sans serif font. Serif fonts are generally easier to read while sans serif fonts impart a more modern look and feel.

Choosing Portfolio Fonts and Pairings

Popular choices for architecture portfolios include Helvetica, Futura and Century Gothic. These fonts are neutral and modern. Some fonts may not come preloaded on your particular computer and may require a paid version. If cost is a concern, start by exploring the many free fonts already installed on your computer.

Serif and sans serif fonts can be combined in your portfolio very effectively. To pair fonts in this way, use a serif font as the title font and a sans serif font for body text, or vice versa. All font pairings should be pleasing to the eye and should harmonize well.

Popular title and text font pairings include:

  • Raleway and Lusitana
  • Futura Bold and Souvenir
  • Century Gothic and PT Serif
  • Montserrat and Courier New
  • Helvetica Neue and Garamond

These are just a few combinations to experiment with in your layouts. The possibilities are endless. Stay away from overused fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman or the much-maligned Comic Sans. Avoid using more than two or three fonts in your portfolio for visual consistency.
