What is Required for an Architecture Portfolio?

If seeking employment in the field of architecture is something that you’re planning to do sometime in the near future, then the first thing that you should consider doing is putting together a portfolio. This will show any and all potential employers and/or clients that you have all of the basic and necessary skills required to perform even the simplest tasks related to architecture. Additionally, it will also provide you with the opportunity to showcase your talents as it relates to the field as well.

Here are some of the most basic requirements for an architecture portfolio that you will need to make note of.

Table of Contents

This section is an important one, as it can help potential employers and/or clients easily find sections that they may be more interested in seeing than others, as well as being able to navigate to them quickly.

Information About Yourself

This section should include a resume that details your education, any previous employment that you may have had in relation to the architecture field, and the means in which you can be contacted in the event that there are any questions you will need to be asked. Typically, you will want to make sure that the following contact information is included as part of this:

  • Full name
  • Home address
  • Telephone number (home and mobile)
  • Email address
  • Examples of Previous Works

As opposed to an interior design portfolio, you may find that more time may be necessary to spend deciding exactly which pieces to include as part of this type of portfolio. This is completely normal, as you will want to include only what you feel are the best works that you’ve completed. Furthermore, you will also want to be sure that you include projects that you’ve completed as part of a team, as no doubt that when you enter the workforce as an architect, you will end up finding yourself as part of a team on more than one occasion. When including your examples, you will also want to include both titles and tidbits of information regarding each one.

Categories

Going back to the project examples that you include, it also may be a good idea to include them in different types of categories if you are able to. Doing so will allow potential employers and/or clients to have an idea of the type of experience that you have in regards to specific types of projects. In terms of this section, consider using tabs and labels so that the categories will be easily seen.

References

While there may be some architectural design firms that may not require something like this, it still may be a good idea to include a small list of references just to be safe. These can be either professional, personal, or a mixture of both; however, prior to including anyone, you will want to extend the common courtesy of first obtaining permission from those that you wish to include.

Regardless of whether your portfolio will be physical, digital, or both, these are just a select few of the basics that you will want to include as part of it. You may also choose to be creative and add a few more sections; however, be careful to not go too crazy and/or overboard with things, as you will want to ensure that your portfolio remains as professional as possible. With a portfolio that’s been well constructed, you’ll be ensuring that you will be able to secure that dream architectural job that you’ve been searching for!
