What should the layout of my interior design portfolio look like?

When it comes to creating a great interior design portfolio, perhaps one of the most challenging aspects involves exactly how you should compose your portfolio’s overall layout. There are all sorts of options to choose from; however, you may likely want to go with something that will make yours truly stand out above everyone else’s in order to truly wow a potential employer and/or client.

Here are some of the basic things to include as part of a layout of your portfolio.

Project Title

Whether the specific project you are showcasing is residential or commercial, you should always come up with a title for it. Additionally, consider making it stand out on the page by using big text in front of a colored banner, as well as including if the project is residential or commercial in nature.

Outline of Project

This is where you will want to include a brief description of the project that you are showcasing on the page. Talk a bit about what was needed to be done in order to complete it, as well as what steps you decided to take in order to achieve the end result. This should typically be placed underneath the title of the project.

Color Scheme

Be sure to include samples of the main colors that you decided to use as part of the main color scheme for the project itself. Consider placing these above the title of the project; however, you can generally place them anywhere you wish.

Floor Plans

Regardless of how many floors the project involves, always include detailed floor plans as part of your layout. These should also include brief samples of your chosen color scheme; however, the entire floor plan does not need to be colored in. Additionally, be sure that you include furniture pieces and proper measurements where necessary.

Perspective Drawing

Select one space from your floor plan and made a perspective drawing of it, again making sure that you make use of your chosen color scheme as part of your illustration. Furthermore, be sure that you label the drawing in order to make it known which area space is supposed to be located in.

Elevation Drawing

Similar to your perspective drawing, you will also want to select an area of your floor plan to make a drawing of; however, this time around, it should be an elevation drawing. Again, you should utilize your chosen color scheme to help illustrate the drawing.

Whether you decide to make your portfolio a physical one or a digital one (or even both just to have a variety), it’s always a good idea to take the time to make each page of your work examples like this. Doing so will help to make your portfolio look much more professional in nature, it will also show potential employers and/or clients that you are proud of the work that you’ve completed, as well as serious about wanting to obtain a job in the interior design field.
